Into the Blue

Pigtails and polyester skirts, dreams as big as the sky

Believed she’d ride in hot air balloons, meet the perfect guy

Rose-colored glasses, worn until her eyes shaded pink

A grown woman now, in a dark corner with a drink, unsatisfied

To ride the tide of someone else’s wave, embittered

Shadows follow her from her heart’s shallow grave;

Singularly unable to understand her metered path, distance

Between the reasons, beyond the reach of her grasp;

An insignificant bubble in a stream of carbonated dreams,

Floating down an open drain to an unforgiving sea

Any Given Saturday

Liquid dreams, she sees sunshine thru a prism

Tiptoes past the moon to dance in the heavens

Her gypsy heart sees the lines, but they blur

The fragrance of the cosmos flavors her universe

Delicate, her confidence, sprouts from a restless seed

Grows into a vine that spreads like an unchecked weed

I thought I caught a glimpse of her in the mirror one day

She winked and she smiled, but continued on her way

Present Circumstances

Headlights reached into the darkness,

I searched for a place to stop,

To get off this road to nowhere

Giants lurked in the shadows,

Unsettled, I continued on

Should morning happen to find me;

I’m only a grifter seeking the sun,

Willing to lay down my transgressions,

You can count them one by one

I’ll not be beholden to tomorrow

I’ll not gather food as the autumn squirrel

Today’s the only day I’m claiming

Won’t depend on the mussel with the pearl

My eagerness to follow the dream,

The one that keeps me out of yesterday

Only serves to run me ragged;

I’ll grasp on to today

Ram your shovel into the earth

Dig up all that you can find

I’m happy to keep on believin’

There’s a place for you and I

Reflections and Dreams

This post is a bit of a mish-mash of thoughts. First, thank you all for reading this little bit of me. My blog is a personal reflection of the things in my head, the characters that speak to me, and the visions I have of a fictitious world that I enjoy sharing with you. I appreciate every moment of time you spend here. When I started this journey, I was a little nervous about putting work into the blogosphere, putting myself out there to be critiqued and judged. When I was Freshly Pressed for the post, “Mood Music,” I was blown away by the responses and number of views. It was exciting and humbling. I’ve found in blogging a very supportive community and I am so very thankful I took the chance and I am so thankful for each of you.

One of my goals was to publish a book by the end of this year. I’m so thrilled I’ve achieved that goal with the 5-star reviewed, “Marked: Collected Ramblings.”  I am very excited to be working on new projects, one of them being a book of flash fiction based on black and white photographs my mother has taken. Her photographs will be included in the book. To see examples of her work, please visit Linda Segerson Photography.

Another project is a book of poetry and another book of short stories/flash fiction. I also have a novel in mind – very scary project for me. The novel is absolutely intimidating to me, and if this one comes together as I envision, it may possibly work into a trilogy – very, very daunting for me to even think about, but I’ve already started some free writing and research for it. I’m not putting too much pressure on myself for this particular project, though, because I know me – I know that I don’t outline, which seems would automatically make the task more challenging. Plus, I must really ‘feel’ the writing, love the story and enjoy the work or I won’t finish it. If all those things come together, well then book magic may ensue.

One realization I’ve come to is that I can be brave in my writing and I will be. My editor, Scott Morgan of Write Hook says to “write for the jugular” and that’s what I intend to do. I won’t hold back, and I will be authentic for both the characters and the story. I will not fear criticism, she says, clearly determined to make herself believe.

As I see it, 2013 is full of promise and possibility – why not dream big and plan big? I wish for you all a happy new year and that you all pursue your dreams to the fullest. So, want to share some of yours for the new year? Any big plans, writing or otherwise? I would love to hear all about it!

Down In This Place

I’m down in this place

Where the fish won’t bite

Where the music won’t play

Staring at a yellow moon of

Fear and fantasy today

I’m down in this place

Let the fortune makers know

Jam is in my window seals

Death is in the dough

Funny how we get our thrills

On and on we go

Yeah, on and on we go

I’m down in this place

The punch is spiked with grief

Catch a ride on the tilt-a-whirl

Best ride at the fair, save Sallie

Yeah, she’s your happy girl

I’m down in this place

Cream floats to the top

It’s all good til you realize

You’ve had your last drop

Swallow that mouthful of lies

On and on we go

Yeah, on and on we go

Amethyst Dreams

In this envelope of the cosmos, unsealed by the nimble fingers of time, where the Divine brushes the ordinary, a breath releases its destiny

Let one sigh wind its way through the atmosphere to fall against the naked lobe of a lover

Infinity is only unattainable if limitations are imposed –

What are your impositions?

Allow the caress of movement to be the guide; else faultless dust will land on the stoic

Fearless fortunes are made or broken this way

What If?

Some of you know that occasionally I’ll write song lyrics. I’ve been sitting on these a little while so I thought I’d share. It’s hard to judge a lyric without hearing the music but the music is stuck in my head (as I’m not a musician).  I will say that I hear something contemporary and upbeat with the words. Songs are strange, they’re not poetry and yet they are. Anyway, have a go at critiquing these.

              What If?

Don’t deny the possibility

Let go of your hypocrisy

Let me let you in one more time

We’ll find the dreams that you cannot hide

Walk along our own boardwalk

Drink the sky’s diamonds in the dark

Let go of the still to take a ride

Liquid motion floats us on a silent tide

What if… what if we went for it?

What if…what if you believed?

What if… what if there’s something more, only you and I can see?

What if we took a leap into our fantasies?

Sing the worth of every song

Take your turn even if it’s wrong

Play one for the truth of all mankind

Know you’re destined for this heart of mine

Shh, you don’t have to say it baby

No, no, no, dreams can come true

What if…what if we went for it?

What if…what if you believed?

What if…what if there’s something more, only you and I can see?

What if we took a leap into our fantasies?

Facing Opposition

by Sheila Pierson

My hope is that those of you pursuing your dreams have an excellent support system around you. It can be damned difficult if you don’t. You mustn’t allow the naysayers to get you down or break your spirit. Some of the worst offenders can be family. One thing to remember is that they probably never realized their own dreams and in some convoluted interpretation of nurturing, they think they are helping you in some way. Or, you are no longer living according to the standards they set for you and it terrifies them. Either way, when faced with unsolicited advice or opinions from family and friends about how you should live, work and dream, stay true to yourself. If you don’t, one day you will look back on the path of your life and wonder why you didn’t at least try; you may question yourself for being afraid of not taking those chances that may have brought you the greatest blessings and joys or doubt your own tenacity, never knowing what you were really made of.

I’ll leave off with this:  If you always live to please others and to meet their expectations how will you ever know who you really are?
